Pros: No WordPress information necessary; more content publishing time.
Cons: More costly than shared hosting.
A controlled host might be a good idea to prevent more work in the back than in the front. WordPress on a shared host offers as much flexibility as on a WordPress service if a budget is in mind, but knowing how the platform functions at the expense of time. The best way to go might be to host WordPress specifically, with backups in one location, and WordPress on auto-pilot when it comes to maintaining the app.Notice that WordPress will soon cease support for PHP 4 and MySQL 4, so if you intend to continue using WordPress next year (2011), it is highly suggested that you move to a host that has PHP 5 and MySQL 5 in order to avoid having to use an older version of WordPress in the foreseeable future when PHP 4/MySQL4 is no longer supported by the newer versions. Dream host and Bluehost both have PHP 5 and MySQL 5, respectively. You can get additional information see here.
For advanced users, Dream host is an ideal hosting provider. Their Control Panel is a little different from cPanel/Plesk, but if you know what you are doing, they have so many more features than cPanel/Plesk. And if you instal WordPress on Dream host using “WordPress one-click installer” they will automatically upgrade it for you. This is a positive thing because if a new version comes out, you don’t have to update WordPress manually. But you need to be careful not to hack the WordPress core code or core files, because when they update a new version, the modifications will be overwritten. I’ve heard a lot of mixed feedback about dream host help, but because their knowledge base and wiki are very full, I never really had to contact them. To host my Web Development Site, I personally use Dream host and it is my recommended hosting provider for developers and technical savvy people. Dream host costs $8.53 a month, which is a little pricier than most shared hosting, but you get what you pay for and by using this coupon you can get $30 off: WEBDEV30.
